    Description

    Brand New
    Baroque clarinet in D (Re)
This is the reproduction model of “the first clarinet” made by a German, Johann Christopher Denner in 1690. He converted one of the existing keys of the “Chalumeau”, which could only play in a lower register, to make it the “speaker / register” key, which allowed him to produce notes a 12th higher in pitch than normal. This increased the instrument’s range hugely. The clarinet produced a loud, shrill sound, which resulted in the name being derived from the Italian word “clarion” which means “straight trumpet” hence the upper register is known as the “Clarion” register and the lower as “Chalumeau” register.
This model represents the 2nd Generation from 1740-50 by J. G. Zencker, in D, with 2 keys; original of which is in the Germanisches National Museum, Nurnberg. A German composer and musician Johann Sebastian Bach introduced the model to London in 1751.
It’s only really used on the overtones of the harmonic series, which is the 2nd and 3rd register of the clarinet. Composers only wrote for it from middle C upwards, which is the same fingering as it is on the normal clarinet.
Composers: Vivaldi, Telemann, Handel, concerts of Molter, operas of Rameau
This model is pitched in D, at 415hz and it’s quite high. It has a much brighter sound, which made it refer to as a “Mock trumpet” as well, and was used like a trumpet in pieces.
It has a fully chromatic range, and is capable of playing both Bb and B natural in the throat register (the fingering, which is different from the modern clarinet).
Indian Cocobolo wood (friendly wood to extreme weather conditions) is used with 2 brass keys, “A” and speaker/register key.
We have done a slight modification in the original design of the mouthpiece.
Also Available: Clarinets in A (La) key, B flat (Sib) key, Eb (Mib) key, C (Do) Key
and G (Sol) key are available in
