Description

Here is a fantastic R13: Academy Model! These clarinets are actually R13s that didn't pass the tight quality control standards. Essentially, the Academy Model from Buffet is an R13 that came with a little defect on the stamp or scratch on the key work or something minor that doesn't affect the instrument but was too expensive at that time to fix. Therefore, the Academy model is less expensive than the "regular" R13. The catalogued item number was R113. Buffet's early seventies catalog lists basically only three models (give or take).
Top of the line was still their R-13, the best seller, the clarinet that (so they claimed) 90% of all the pro players used- best wood, superb tonal qualities. The catalog also notes their Academy R-113, originally marketed as the same as an R-13 but with some minor defects. Third was the Evette-Schaeffer Master Model: ME-13, which had slightly different key work and and a little bit less hand finishing/attention to detail. Therefore this Academy Model is a wonderful opportunity to get a vintage R13 that plays great and has that dense wood used at the time.
This clarinet in particular has no cracks or chips to the body- the wood is in excellent condition, and has been well maintain. The plating is a little cloudy, but is otherwise in great shape. At least some of the pads will need to be replaced.
Please be aware: payment must be received within 24 hours of the auction ending. If payment is not received within that timeframe, the clarinet will be offered to the next highest bidder.

edited to add: upon closer inspection, there is one small crack in the lower joint, at the end of the tenon. It is visible in the last photo above. The crack is very short, and does not extend under the cork of the tenon.
