    Description

Please:  NOT FOR BEGINNERS!  Offered here is a shop matched pair of Selmer Series 9's in "A" and "B-flat".  Both clarinets are in wonderful condition and, although not adjacent serial numbers, have been matched in performance qualities here in our shop and in actual ensemble performance.  S/N model A:  U3393 (circa 1966)  S/N B-flat:  V2640 (circa 1967).  Both joints match S/N's on each instrument.  There are NO CRACKS or repaired cracks. NOTE:  I would consider selling the A separately.  I have other B-flats that are being restored at this time and a B-flat 9 Star listed already; so I will not break-up this matched pair for the B-flat.
Sample of Selmer 9 in Bb S/N
Included is a perfectly matched exceptional Charles Bay Ithaca, New York mouthpiece, a high quality Luyben ligature, an original Selmer 9 barrel (which is a little too short for most ensemble performance) and two custom Grenadilla barrels made to the necessary qualities of each instrument.  Although these barrels can be interchanged with fine results (and pitch); they have slight advantages when paired up properly with each intended instrument.  They come packaged in a new ProTec double clarinet case with new Semer swab with cork grease & natural bore shield supplied by the Instrument Clinic in Eaton Rapids, MI.
As you may know, the Series 9 replaced (chronologically) the Centered Tone (1950's).  The 9* then followed with some alterations like the undercutting of upper joint tone holes which allowed for a slight variation in tone and a more ergonomic placement of tone holes.  The 9 and 9 Star were offered simultaneously for about a decade.  All are of the "big bore" family of clarinet design.  Advantages are described as "ease of blow", "wider range of dynamics" as well as "more flexibility in musical expression".  Even though complaints have been staged on the pitch of the lower register, the proper balance of intonation has been corrected with our knowledge of acoustics.  With the aged wood and the ProArte fine-tuning, one will find that these two clarinets surpass most of the mid-priced professional clarinets currently being manufactured.
We believe instruments of this quality should be auditioned and compared with other choices.  It is not our intention for someone to be stuck with any instrument that is not a match to one's personality and ambitions.  Although some players have other choices in mouthpieces, we request that the enclosed offering is tried to ensure that the proper qualities "shine" when auditioning this fine pair.  This is why we will give you ten days to try the instruments. All shipping will be the responsibility of the buyer and Don't open the packaged accessories if you plan on returning the clarinets.
