The electrodynamic lamp was used in the army, it is equipped with a built-in dynamo. A special feature of this lamp is autonomous operation without replaceable power sources — galvanic cells or batteries. Due to the presence of a dynamo, the user usually activates such a lamp manually by rotating or pressing a handle connected to a dynamo, which converts mechanical energy into electrical energy, which feeds the light source.
In the USSR, electrodynamic lamps were produced with a built-in dynamo and an incandescent lamp. In the common people, they were nicknamed "bugs" for the characteristic sound when working. Such "bugs" were equipped with a spring handle.
The device from which all the types of electric flashlights known to us originated was invented and patented in 1899 in the United States by David Mysell, who in the same year sold his patent to the American Electrical Novelty and Manufacturing Company, founded by a native of Belarus Konrad Hubert (aka Akiba Horowitz). Mysell's lantern already had all the features familiar to us, for example, from Maglight lanterns. In fact, it was just a tube made of thick cardboard. On one side, a light bulb with a metal reflector and a lens was mounted in it. On the other hand, the tube had a lid under which 3 cylindrical batteries were loaded. In addition to the cardboard case, the distinctive feature of the first lantern can be considered the original design of the switch: to light the lantern, it was necessary to press a metal ring mounted on the body to another metal part — a hoop with your thumb.
